Summer Sports in Bozeman, Montana

You usually look to Outside Bozeman for the high-action, adrenaline pumping sports – kayaking, extreme skiing, climbing, mountain biking.  But lets not forget the wide world of sports we all played in high school – soccer, softball, baseball, lacrosse.

Yes, you live in Bozeman to live, breathe, outdoor sports.  And that is great.  But maybe its time to start including the bread-and-butter sports we all grew up on?  Consider it cross-training for your active outdoor activities.  And if your new to town or been here all your life, playing organized athletics you’ll meet your fellow citizen (and voters – if you didn’t notice, it is an election year).  Plus, the evening views are spectacular while playing in the Gallatin Valley.

Bozeman’s adult soccer league is loaded with people of all ages and nationalities.  This league has been run by Steve Denny and his wife for more than a decade; they are backbone of adult soccer in Bozeman (anyone want to volunteer to run it?).  Playing in the Rec league offers the novice American and the seasoned Brazilian a chance to play alongside each other.  Each year the teams are ‘drafted’ so the teams are fairly even and players get to know everyone in the league after playing for a couple years. They offer a league for competitive players too.

Bozeman’s softball league is not the beer-belly game you might think it is (unless you have one and want to play).  There are several levels of competitiveness; some divisions with girls and without girls, some divisions where a ball over the fence is a homerun and others where over the fence is an out.  Hundreds of people play summer adult softball – I’d be surprised if you didn’t know someone.  Some people may call it the beer league, but its been years since they allowed beer in the dugouts – only soda and tea now.

If hitting a big ball is too easy for you, try the men’s’ baseball league, Montana Hardball.  Same old game that you played as a kid only everyone is older – and heavier (like all those people you saw at your ten-year high school reunion).  This league has grown over the last couple years and starting this year they have gone back to the basics with wood bats.  Sure, it’s competitive, but these guys all have to work the next day so they keep it fun.

While you wouldn’t know it living in Montana, lacrosse is growing nationwide and, yes, there is a men’s club here.  These guys meet weekly to play (or learn to play) with college level players along side neophytes eager to pick up on the fastest growing sport in America.

Knowing us Bozemanians, there are many more to play.  And even with all the options for summer organized sports, yes, there is still time to be extreme – you won’t have to sacrifice time to bomb downhill on a bike.  And you may even be in better shape to enjoy the crash.

Play It Again Sports is your local-sports-info center.  Call us and we can connect you with the sport you play.
